an antler idea

My mum used to do field work up in Northern Canada, and on one of her trips she came across two sets of discarded antlers, which she trucked back to Ontario with her. For years they had been hanging on a tree outside of our cottage, until a few months ago when I suggested we take them down and do something with them. Have you started to notice antlers becoming super trendy in home decor lately? I definitely have. We’re still debating whether we want to white-wash them (they have weathered to a grey colour over the years), paint them, mount them to a board or some sort, or what. I’ll definitely keep you posted on what we end up doing.

For now I have been gathering inspiration. Here are a few of my faves that I have spotted on Pinterest.

What about you guys? Into the antlers, or not so much? I think they have such interesting angles and are so beautiful. Got any in your room? Ever painted any? I wanna hear about it!

i prefer the fake ones! :) i have a set of papier mache antlers above my daughter’s bed…. the real ones, as cool as they look, sort of gross me out.

    • That’s fair enough! I just checked out your paper mache ones and they look great. And I’m totally loving that mural painted on your daughter’s closet doors… so darling!!

    Hi Gemma,
Love that you are covering this topic…I have antler table lamp that is in need of a shade. I have been looking around for options, but I can only find traditional cabiny type ideas, and I would prefer something more contemporary. Any ideas?

    Jo

    • Yeah, that’s tricky since it could easily go into the “too woodsy” category. It’s a bit hard to picture without seeing the lamp base itself, but I would go for a drum shade. You might even paint out the antlers in white or something to make it more contemporary?

I found a few pics online:

I really want some antlers, but can’t persuade Rodney. They are also really expensive here, so I am jealous you managed to get some free ones. xox

    • Yeah, they’re not everyone’s thing eh? Well, hopefully you can find an inexpensive set which might help convince the hubby!! :)

I’m on the fence with the antler look.. I’m not sure if my style is rustic enough for it. And I kinda worry about poking my eyes out lol I guess I’d have to make sure they were in a high enough place or they were over a big piece of furniture so avoid any run-ins :P
