going green

One of the topics I haven’t written about on here, although I do it before every home tour photo I take, is actually cleaning our house. I’m a good tidier – I like to make a room look presentable (messy house = clammy hands and slight panic… OCD much? ha ha), but I’m not the greatest cleaner. I always put it off until I.just.can’t.wait.another.day. I have been using ‘green’ products for a while now, things like the Mrs Meyer’s and Method products, but still do use some bleach cleaner in our bathroom from time to time and a not-very-environmentally-friendly “drain-o” too when our tub is getting a little clogged. Maybe because it’s fall and I’m starting to do my nesting thing of cooking and freezing food for the winter and organizing all of our cupboards, but I’m really wanting to try out homemade cleaning products.

I saw this list of top 20 homemade cleaning products on happy go lucky blog…

And Maillard Ville Manor made a really great looking all-purpose cleaner with all sorts of good stuff…

Does anyone have any great “recipes” or tips to share? Or do you have a favourite product that you use? And what about for stuff beyond the regular countertop cleaning…like for wood floors, or rugs, or laundry?

I’m definitely putting this on the to-do list for the next few weeks. I’ll report back with any successes!! Plus, making a bunch of new cleaners means I can maybe print some cute labels and organize my cleaning supplies bucket. Is it weird that I’m totally excited by that prospect? Ha ha.

Alright, I’m all ears folks – recipes, tips, and other recommendations welcome. A penny for your thoughts.

Thanks to GreenChoice for sparking this idea! Check them out for various ‘green’ upholstery cleaning, leather cleaning, and carpet cleaning like their oriental rug cleaning.
