life lately: work, events + a giveaway

13th March 2015

Time for one of those posts where I blab on about a bunch of things that have been happening around here of late. It’s Friday and I don’t have any project updates, but I do feel like there are a bunch of life updates… so here goes.

Things have been a bit all over the map. In terms of work, I’ve got a bunch of things on the go — new product lines for THE SWEETEST DIGS CO. and branching out more into retail/wholesale, a short term contract in my “day job” realm of work (public health + development), writing my 5-article series for the Globe & Mail newspaper (last article published yesterday!), doing some website and decorating work for a few clients, and (slowly) trying to chip away at finishing up more of the house (remember how I’m doing ALL of the painting myself? Yep, well… it’s a lot). You should see my “to do” lists every week – you would have no idea how one thing relates to another. All that to say though, that I’m super happy on the work front. I have my hands in a bunch of different pots and I love it.

Speaking of THE SWEETEST DIGS CO., a few retailers that carry my prints here in Ottawa have been all kinds of sweet with their displays lately. Boogie + Birdie put this pic up on instagram which totally made me blush. And then when I was out and about, I came across this window at the Village Quire… Yep, there is even a big sign there (hard to see because of the glare) that says “Introducing THE SWEETEST DIGS at the Village Quire!”. Totally a squeal moment for me.

village quire

Oh and I have a million ideas for new product lines that I have been working on… one of which are pillows! My first batch came in the other day and I’m thrilled. They are made of a velveteen fabric and I basically just want to rub my face on them all day long. They’ll be up for sale in the etsy shop soon – so keep your eyes peeled! Here is a sneak peak…

In other news, Dan has been away in Europe for work for the last two weeks, which has been.. well… long. Maya is in daycare during the weekdays so I can get work done, but even so, the whole solo parenting thing is a tough gig. I have a ridiculous amount of admiration and respect for single parents. Needless to say, we’re pretty excited to have him back this weekend. It also happens to be his 35th birthday on Sunday, so I have some decorating and birthday scheming to do.

Oh, before Dan left though, we went to a really fun event that you might have seen on instagram (you can follow me here, if you don’t already).

Us, pre-event and all dressed up, sitting in out new chairs…

We were invited to a soiree here in Ottawa called The Secret Supper (#TheSecretSupper). I was invited because I’m a local blogger, and so in addition to other blog folks there were foodies and TV/radio personalities there. We weren’t told who the sponsor was for the evening, but that we would be treated to a 5-course dinner with wine pairings, and at the end of the meal, the sponsor would be announced. Guys, the food was AMAZING. Totally gourmet, 5 star restaurant type stuff (it was held at the Ottawa’s Elmdale Oyster House and Tavern). People were guessing Whole Foods was the sponsor, as they recently opened up a location in Ottawa. As you can imagine, we were all completely flabbergasted when it turned out to be Giant Tiger! Yep, good ol’ GT Boutique. And they did the whole five courses for around $30 a person. Everything down the salt was from the Giant Value line. I’ll admit I have been a Giant Tiger snob and haven’t been into their store in years. Well, I feel pretty silly about that now. The decor in the restaurant was also using all Giant Tiger products and apparently they have a new line coming out in the fall. You bet I’ll be checking it out. You can watch the video of the evening here.

You might have also seen on instagram that I went out and had a look at the new Urban Barn location here in Ottawa (Barrhaven, for local folks). It is massive and I drooled over just about everything in the store. Not really, no drool stains anywhere, but you know what I mean. From rugs to pillows to furniture to dishes, they have tons of really nice things.

UPDATE: Winners have been randomly drawn and contacted. Congratulations!

Anyway, just a little snapshot of life lately.

How have things been going in your neck of the woods? Are you in full spring mode? The weather has been getting warmer here (FINALLY) and it has made me all bubbly and happy again. Man, that cold winter we had here this year can really bring a girl down. Here’s to fresh flowers, sunshine, and flip flops… !

moroccan rug review from Mohawk Home and giveaway - via the sweetest digs

a budget friendly moroccan rug & giveaway

4th March 2015

You probably noticed in the post about the fireplace built-in’s earlier this week the new rug we have in our living room. Let me back up and tell you a little about it, m’kay?

For a long while now I have lusted after those Moroccan style rugs that we’ve all been spotting all over design magazines, blogs, websites, etc. You know, the ones that are a bit shaggy, are creamy coloured, and have some dark diamond style pattern on them? Gorgeous, right? I nearly pulled the trigger on more than one occasion when I saw a good deal, but knew that I really needed to wait to see how our living room panned out. Maybe the size would be wrong, or the whole style wouldn’t work as I thought it would.

As our living room started to come together with the white and gray built-ins, brass accents, and our gray couch (our EQ3 Reverie), I knew that the Moroccan style rug would work. I wanted something with some interest and pattern, but nothing too colourful or distracting. I didn’t really want to go with anything gray as we already have a lot of it on this main floor. And I knew that the soft shagginess underfoot would add to the cozy factor in the space.

In looking around, I spotted this rug from Mohawk Home. The colours were just right (I liked that the darker detail was in black, not brown) and the price was great too. You have probably come across Mohawk Home rugs in a bunch of places but may not have realized it — Target, Walmart, Overstock, etc.

Once it arrived, a certain little somebody was seriously digging the shag…morrocan rug from Mohawk Home - via the sweetest digs

This beauty was around $65 for the 5×7 and $140 for the 8×10. Seriously low prices, hey? Made me wonder a bit about quality. We got it home and have lived with it for a few weeks now, and I’m happy to report that I have been really pleased with the quality. It took a minute to flatten out from being all rolled up, but once it did it feels plush and thick, and it doesn’t shed like some of my previous wool rugs have done. Couldn’t be more pleased, really.

It has a cool mellow vibe, and actually I feel like could fit into just about any style of room. Sort of like persian rugs, doesn’t really matter what colour scheme or design style you are going for, it just somehow works. morrocan rug from Mohawk Home - via the sweetest digs

I feel like I could’ve gone for a size up, as it only just barely slips under the furniture. Potentially down the rug I might move this rug to another room and get a bigger one for the living room – we’ll see. morrocan rug from Mohawk Home - via the sweetest digs

Now for the fun stuff! I’m guessing you would be up for winning a rug from Mohawk Home? The prize up for grabs is any rug of your choice up to 5×8 in size and under $150. Open to residents of the USA and Canada.

Good luck!

**CANADIANS –> Sadly, the Moroccan style rug isn’t available through the Canadian Walmart, and so anyone in Canada looking for it would need to ship from the States.

A big thanks to Mohawk Home for partnering with us on this project! You can check out their new ‘Still Made in America’ video here, and follow along with the hastag #ilovemymohawkrug to check out how other folks are styling their rugs.

sweet find: camp & cabin giveaway

8th December 2014

So if you ever knock on my door around dinnertime (or afterwards), there is a 99% chance I will answer the door in my pyjamas. I basically come through the door at the end of the work day, go to our bedroom, and throw on my PJ pants. No snack, no drink, no nothing, until I get into the comfy clothes.

So imagine my absolute delight when I came across Snugabye’s camp & cabin onesies. A one piece fleecy pyjama? Hello, best most cozy invention ever. I’ll take 7 pairs.

How sweet would it be to snuggle up in one of these over the holidays? If you want to order one (they are on sale right now!), you need to order by December 20th to get it in time. Plus, use promo code ‘COZY’ to get $15 off an adult onesie.

Snugabye has been making comfy and quality sleep/loungewear for kiddos for 60+ years (since 1947!). About time they make something for mama’s and daddios, don’t you think?!

My ‘favourite things’ giveaway closed over the weekend (congrats to our winner, Daniela!), but don’t despair… Camp & Cabin has a contest running right now for a chance at winning 1 of 3 prize packs, which include a camp & cabin onesie of your choice plus a $100 VISA gift card. Sweet, huh?

Camp & Cabin

Contest is open to Canadian and United States residents only, excluding Quebec. The contest runs until December 15th 2014.

Disclosure: I am part of the Snugabye Blogger Campaign with Mom Central Canada and I receive special perks as part of my affiliation with this group.  The opinions on this blog are my own.

RBC rewards 101 + a giveaway!

28th August 2014

Are you guys ‘points’ people? You know, have the cards for the different places you shop and earn points that you can redeem for various products? I DEFINITELY am. My mum was always big on points, and we took quite a few family trips thanks to various travel rewards programs.

Dan and I both had travel reward type credit cards when we first met – he was with RBC and I was with another Canadian bank. One of our early Christmases together he brought me down to Florida on RBC points, and after seeing how easy it was to book the exact flight I wanted, it lured me over to RBC. I have since been converted to their visa card program, with it’s excellent rewards system.

Speaking of that Florida trip, here we are back in 2007… before careers, house, baby, and all that. Plus super blonde hair and oversized hoop earrings. They were my jam.

xmas 2007 192

We tend to always save up the points for travel, but when the #RBCRewards101 campaign came out, I headed on over to to check it out. I totally hadn’t realized the number of different products you can purchase with points – it’s not just flights and car rentals. You can get gift cards, Best Buy and Future shop products, all kinds of stuff. We love to save ours up for travel though, so what I was even more excited about? The fact that if you shop through you can earn WAY more points per purchase — that trip to Mexico (or Italy? Or Turks and Caicos? Ahhh …) will come sooner than we planned! The retailers that have signed up to give you bonus points include the Apple Store, ALDO, Banana Republic, Forever 21, GAP, The Home Depot and Lowe’s (!!), Indigo, Old Navy, Vistaprint, Walmart, and hundreds of others. Seriously how did I not know this?? I am definitely going to be purchasing through the RBC “eMall” from now on when I’m doing online orders.

I’m not quite in the “back to school” rush yet with Maya as she is only 1 year old … but I know a lot of other parents who are doing some big orders right now. This would be a perfect way to get a little extra bang for your buck. Maybe let you go on that March break trip you’re dreaming of? RBC has also created a “Back to School” hub with some videos that you can check out here.

Okay so now for a giveaway. This one is only open to Canadians (sorry non-Canadian readers – another giveaway to come soon..!). The prize? A $25 gift card to either Target, Esso, Indigo, or Best Buy. You’ll rank your preference and they will do their best to get you your top pick. Enter through the rafflecopter widget below.

Finer details: You may enter to win across multiple blogs (that are participating in the RBC Back to School campaign), but can only win on one. You must be 18 and live in Canada (excluding QC). You can expect to receive your prize 4-6 weeks after the contest closes.

CIL Paint Giveaway

21st July 2014

Are you itching to do a project around the house? Definitely the fastest and easiest way to fix up a space or piece of furniture is to give it a fresh coat of paint. Seriously, works wonders. Sometimes you can get into a bit of a paint paralysis situation where you deliberate and deliberate on what colour to go for – I have been known to do this for sure – but it’s always best to just bite the bullet and go for it. After all, it’s only paint.

The bunkie has been painted (more on that soon!), and my Mum and I also just decided to take on re-doing my room in our cottage as well. So painting that room is up next for us there!

Do you need some paint for your next project? CIL Paints has offered 3 free gallons of paint to one lucky reader! You can find CIL in Canada at The Home Depot, Rona, Walmart, Canadian Tire, and at independent stores across Canada. You can check out their “Stop Paint Paralysis” campaign here – you can sign up to get 20% off your paint purchase!

Here is a gorgeous room for inspiration – the back of the built ins is painted in Peking Blue (56BG 23/355*) by CIL Paint.

Contest open to Canadian residents only. Contest closes on Friday July 25th 2014. Enter using the RaffleCopter widget below.

What would you use the paint on? Is there a room in your pad that is desperate for a new coat of paint? Maybe a piece of furniture that needs re-doing? What colour would you choose?

etsy giveaway

I log on to etsy daily to check out the latest beauties on their homepage, and then to monitor my own shop’s activities. Some of the stuff I have been eyeing lately?

I *love* the custom house portraits that Amy Brearley does. I have this on my wishlist for our little pad…

The geometric of this brass necklace is gorge, right? It reminds me a bit of Navaho rugs. Love! il_570xN.435872364_aiho

I am dying over these prints. How sweet would they look in a nursery? The colours of the ‘rise and shine’ one would go in Maya’s room. I think this might have to make it into my shopping cart…il_570xN.436852007_d512

Are you seeing succulents everywhere these days? I definitely am. I love the look and their low maintenance needs (perfect for my I-forget-to-water-all-the-time tendencies). How stunning is this little wood vase for them? il_570xN.460503893_adub

And another necklace that I adore. It’s easy to fall in love with beautiful jewellery on etsy. This one would be great for personalizing with you and your sweetheart’s initials, initials of kiddos. or just other special people in your life! il_570xN.557499441_j2hl

a giveaway: Erin Wallace ‘I Am’ Necklace

11th December 2013

loved up with target: a giveaway!

1st November 2013

Target just opened up a few stores in Ottawa (finally!!), and obviously I have already been twice to do some browsing. Between the Nate Berkus stuff, the threshold collection, and the very Canadian “beaver canoe” line – I have a lot of items on my wish list. So when Target got in touch recently about their wedding campaign and catalogue, I was happy to take a look!

Isn’t this tablescape gorge? As soon as I saw it, I thought it would make such a sweet engagement party setup. Simple and low-key, but so pretty. Just the kind of party I would want.

Doesn’t the blue tableware and the white canister with sprigs in it totally make the table? The hubs and I didn’t have a formal engagement party, but this kind of reminds me of the lovely afternoon meals we had in France with Dan’s family shortly after we got engaged. Who doesn’t love to celebrate over wine and cheese? Deeelish.
