I’ve always loved the mason jar. So simple, pretty, and there are a million and one ways to use them — store your yummy jam or pickled goods, use them as a lantern, as a vase, as a drinking glass, OR fill it up with something lovely and give as a gift! You can buy mason jars from most big department stores, or even order them online via amazon.
For a great DIY gift to give en masse this holiday season, fill up a mason jar with one of the following:
Hot chocolate. Make your own mix or buy your favourite kind in bulk and dispense into each jar. Who doesn’t love cocoa? Here is a recipe from the Food Network and one from allrecipes.com. Want to get extra creative? Try the ‘deluxe hot chai‘ recipe from ‘cakeyvoice’. Yum!
Potpourri. You can buy your favourite smelling potpourri in bulk and separate into jars, OR be even more DIY and make some yourself. Here are a couple of tutorials (here and here), and a specific Christmas potpourri recipe here! Mmmmm smells good!
Baking mixes. Cookies, cakes, or any other baked good make a great jar-filler. Put in the dry ingredients and include a little recipe card so the recipient knows what to add and how long to bake for. Layer the different ingredients in the jar for a fun look. Here is an oatmeal chocolate chip recipe from ‘the comfort of cooking‘ blog (and a couple of extra cookie recipes here, here and here).
Bead kit. A fun gift for crafty kids. Go to your local bead store and grab the basics (wire, fasteners, etc) and then fill the jar with a variety of fun beads. This present will not only be loved, but hopefully it will occupy the kiddos for a few hours!
Bark. No, not the tree kind. I’m thinking more the chocolate or almond kind. This was always something my aunt gave in great quantities at Christmastime to great delight. Check out this super yummy white chocolate and orange cranberry version from ‘chopped garlic‘.
Once filled, tie a ribbon around the jar for a festive touch. You can also find some super sweet free printable labels online for your jars. Some of my faves are from Eat Drink Chic, iDIY, How about Orange, and TipNut.
