side entrance makeover: the painting

30th November 2012

Earlier in the week you saw the ‘before‘ of our sad side entranceway. After initially cleaning up the walls and patching where needed, it was time to slap on some paint.

We have SO much paint in our stash at home, so I really wanted to work with what we already had. I started out with a pretty, muted aqua, which was a mis-tint that I bought from Home Depot for $9 (for a gallon) a while ago. Sometimes those mis-tints are great colours, so it’s worth taking a peak when you’re in the store! The aqua totally worked with the blue/turquoise/grey/green palette in our pad, so I went for it.

It was a slightly treacherous area to paint.  We upgraded from the step ladder to the big ladder to get at the top of the wall, but there wasn’t enough room to securely spread out the footings of the ladder. So there may or may not have been some leaning of the ladder against the stairs and door, while Dan held it in place and I had a mild heart attack stepping up to the top rung. Just don’t look closely at my cutting in on that top edge. There were a few slip ups, and it was too scary to reach up with a cloth to wipe them away. You win some, you lose some, right?

I wanted to keep this nook fairly light and airy since it’s so small, so I we stopped at just painting the one wall – it gave it the pop of colour without being overpowering.

While keeping it light and airy, I still wanted to add a punch of happy to the space. I have been wanting to paint our doors F.O.R.E.V.E.R and just haven’t gotten around to it yet, so this was the perfect opportunity to get started. We had a small can of Rustoleum indoor/outdoor paint in sunshine yellow kicking around, which I figured was a winner since I’m a total sucker for the aqua + yellow combo. I sanded down the door first, wiped away the dust, and didn’t put on any painter’s tape since I just free-styled it (I have a good angled brush, which makes it way easier).

Isn’t it happy? (sorry for the crappy lighting in these photos – this has been an ‘after work’ project this week, so photos are only happening after 6pm!).

Since the door had some nice panelling, I decided to play that up and leave the inset parts white. It kind of gives the door an extra little boost of style and dimension.

As you can tell, I’m already planning where I’m going to put up some artwork. I was mid-way through putting those sheets up, so don’t judge my arrangement quite yet. Just keepin’ it real!

We still have a long way to go, but the paint has already been super transformational. Gotta love paint for that reason.

Still on the list?

-hang artwork
-install light switch cover
-replace light fixture
-spray hardware black (door knobs, banister hardware)
-paint stairs (this may be a ‘phase 2′ of the project)

I have a feeling this little corner of the house is going to end up being a pretty sweet one!

What about you guys? Doing any painting lately? Ever painted a door in your place? Into the turquoise and yellow combo like I am? Or have any fun weekend plans? We’re hosting a Christmas get-together on Saturday evening, so lots of baking and tidying up happening around here!  I think I may even break out some Christmas tunes…yesss!!
